924S Stalling issues
 

Hey everyone,

First time posting here so take it easy on me !

Ok, i purchased an 1987 924s 2.5l 5 speed manual as an project car to learn on( im 19 y/o).

When i first got the car it had a spark issue so it wouldn't start,i solved that issue by new Reference and speed sensor.

Now to my current issue. The car will start first turn of key every time however it dies almost immediately after that. does not matter if i give it throttle or not it will die. Will not idle longer than say 10-15 secs. Now from my limited knowledge that means it is a fuel issues ? am i wrong? I have narrowed it down to injectors. I think it is that due to what i have replaced already, not sure what else it could be. I just would like a second opinion from a knowledgeable source.

I am positive it is timed correctly as well as i did that when fixing the spark as a precautionary measure.

Distributor w/ rotor
spark plugs
fuel filter
fuel pump
Temp. sensor
Reference sensor
Speed sensor
Ignition Coil
Dme relay
fuel pump relay
Vacuum hoses

I will try to reply as fast as i can with answers if you have a question. I am in college and ROTC and work so i have a hectic schedule sometimes. This is a weekend thing i've been enjoying so far. It will be fun if i can figure out the issue. Looking to do the timing belt and head gaskets after i get this issues figured out.

I do not understand how you narrowed it down to the injectors. I'd suspect the AFM myself or a vacuum leak, but before replacing parts I would read the plugs and observe the injectors firing, look at the engine vacuum and so on.

Obviously if it stalls it's not getting enough of one thing or too much of another so which is it? Will it keep running if given a li'l shot of gas or starting fluid? Are the plugs wet or black?

If there is a chance the injectors are dirty I'd clean or replace them even if unrelated to this problem. Like if the car had sat a long time the injectors are probably somewhat spooged and it'll never be quite right until that is addressed.

@Jfrahm I wasnt dead set on it being injectors it was more of a last resort. i took off the AFM yesterday and took it apart to clean the contacts and everything. When i get better weather ill toss it back on its been storming lately here. I went through all the vacuum hoses, everything seems to be connected nicely and no cracks or holes . I had vacuum hose lying around that was still in box so i replaced as much as i could. So some of it is new.

For your first question it will run on starting fluid straight into the TB. Not sure about idleing as i didnt keep spraying it in there.

and the spark plugs are black , Dont remember them being wet though.

It did sit for a little while thats why ive replaced a plethora of things as it will need to be replaced anyways .

Hmm, well if all the plugs are black and equally so, I would not think all the injectors are hosing. I'd then suspect AFM or DME temp sensor, or perhaps more likely a blown FPR or fuel damper. Those are easy to check for gas coming out the vacuum side, but the FPR could also be stuck.

Ignition switch

can you explain plz i havent hear of that being a reason for stalling. Especially after the ignition switch will turn over the car .

924 Ignition switches are poorly designed, very inexpensive, and easy to change. If the car is firing in the "start" position, but not in the "run" position, the switch could be bad.

AH, that makes sense thank you i will probably do that now anyways even if that isnt the issue. But i will look into it. The guy said this car sat for a while . I think he gave up trying to find the issue . But not me I already figured out what he could find so im going to get this car running and driving one way or another!

There's a screen in the gas tank that gets really cruddy and needs to be cleaned or replaced every so many years/miles. You had mentioned that as long as you spray starting fluid in the TB it will run. So it sounds like a fuel supply problem. Check your work on the installation of the fuel filter,fuel pump and pump relay just to be sure that it's installed correctly. Check your fuel lines to verify that fuel is flowing. And the obvious: blown head gasket allowing coolant into the cylinder and fouling out the plugs.
