OPRV install, what is this sleeve that floats around inside the bore
I'm doing a reinstall of my OPRV (old style 3 piece) cause I was thinking it was miss aligned/binding and causing high oil pressure(no alignment tool when I put it in when changing the oil cooler seals a few years ago). When I removed it and inserted the alignment tool I just got (P215 from our hosts) it fit perfectly??
Anyway, while the OPRV was out I looked into the bore and there is a metal sleeve that seems to float around (I already have the cap, spring and piston out)? I saw in a renlist thread that this is supposed to be pressed into the block? Is this correct? could this be the cause of my high oil pressure? |
That sleeve is supposed to be pressed into/glued to the block, and the piston part of your 3 piece OPRV floats in it.
If it is loose, then you need to fix that. I don't think that it being loose would cause high pressure, however. |
kdjones2000 thx, that's what I was afraid of.... more things to take apart....
also, in looking at OPRV's all night, I have found some that have part of the piston like mine, pic from plyhammers site https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/03...G?v=1420471187 and some like this one milled down like this one on ebay, http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/kDkAAO...Ph/s-l1600.jpg are there reasons for the diff? one better that the other? |
Pure speculation but my guess is that they went to the late-style for ease of maintenance due to it being "hard to get to" so you only have to install one piece rather than 3 and fight a spring.
Functionally, lots of "other cars" of newer design use the same type of OPRV as early 944, some might even look interchangeable...I might dig into that one. |
v2rocket_aka944: I understand the diff between the 3 piece and 1 piece, I was asking about the fact that there appears to be 2 types of three piece. I have fixed my post for the different images. Even the caps are different, one is allen, the other is bolt.

Got the oil cooler out. Wondering if the sleeve being loose allowed the oprv piston to bind?
Regardless, that sleeve is not even close to press fitting back in so I'm looking for alternatives. What could I use to glue it back in? the only thing I can think of right off is JB weld. Sugestions? |

Now the decision, are the tolerances close enough for the 648 or loose enough for the 638... it fits in easy, bottoming out with no pressure but not so loose at to be close to .25mm. Thinking 648? Thanks everyone! |
