DA duuuuuuum!!!! Timing belt failure. Or something.

Pulled into my carport two days ago, engine quit just as I was reaching for the key. (odd). Tried to restart, turned over to no avail (yes, I know.) So I get out and see if I have spark. Spark at coil. Good. Check spark at #3 plug. Nothing.

"Simple!" I think. Cap and rotor need to go. "Hell, why not replace the coil, and plug wires while you're at it". The old ones looked horrible inside, and were corroded and worn out.

Sent Pelican Parts $206 and two days later, the parts arrive. I cheerily install them all, get in, turn it over, and nothing. Redid above spark check. Same result.

And then it dawned on me. Why would the coil fire, but not the plugs...unless the distributor is not turning? Oh, no.

So I popped off the front belt cover, and don't see a failed belt (haven't gone any farther), but a tap of the starter shows balance shaft belts turning, but not the timing belt.

You know what the sad thing is? I'm not mad or anything. I get to tear apart the whole top end, and I have a laundry list of "while you are in there" projects.

Hope I didn't wreck too much in the valve/piston department, but I'm sure I did.

Here we go! May be better off with something I had planned - just buying a takeout Turbo motor, and rebuilding this one completely over a period of time.

Belt had 35k + miles. But at this point I am not ruling out some other failure until I look further.

Wish me luck.

Jeff

Thanks, John!

Actually, I need to update. Sadly, "Elise" passed away more than a year ago. I now have the white '88. Her name is Anna.

Another good German name!

The "carport" brought back memories of my past UA life. I pulled my 914 engine in the carport to be rebuilt.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear Jeff! It sounds like you were idling at the time - that is the "best" time for the TB to go.

Hi Jeff, you may not be mad ('cos these things do happen), but everyone who has been in your shoes feels the pain...! Yes, you now have no excuse for doing all those 'while in there' projects, just like I did...however, those can (and usually do) snowball into something more - like a complete renovation and rebuild.

Pistons are probably OK, some valves are probably bent and 951 valves are the most expensive (sodium filled) Hope not too many have gone..

Break out the spanners, it's gonna be a long winter...

You are both correct. Yeah, I'm a little mad, I'll admit (mostly because the weather is so nice and I want to do DE events) but now I am set back.

I won't take all winter. I do know that when it starts next time, I plan to be around 300 RWHP... :0

My gun collection is going to be sacrificed for the good of autosport!

I'm probably just going to set up a table at a gun show and see what happens! I really don't actively collect anything these days (I did collect WWII German, British, and I have some American). Fortunately, it may be enough to get all this done and have some improvements to the car as well.

Why not. Why not indeed.

Yeah, Rhett, I was thinking that same thing. Why is everything I like expensive? Why can't I like scooters or make dream catchers for a hobby?

*sigh*

Nope, I have to go ridiculously fast, and not in a Toyota. Oh, no. I had to have a Porsche when I was a kid. And a non turbo just isn't enough.

On my gravestone, it will say, "Becareful what you wish for, because you just may get it". I'm half serious about that.

^^^ Hey Jeff, I can really relate to all of the above! Except I am still working on my own personal must have Porsche - the 968...

However, just to keep the hobbies going I have decided to move onto the next 'simple' thing, making acoustic guitars! But I am sure the '44 will still continue to get my attention...as it's my daily driver now.

Keep us posted on your progress, and lots of pictures please!

And we're off! How nice of her to die in my carport.

Fuel rail and stuff gone. Had an injector tip cap stick in #3 port. Whoops. Time for 55# injectors and a 3bar FPR, I guess (he he)

"one of these things is not like the other..." like the Sesame Street childhood song.

Kinda oily in there. But the belts look physically OK. Whatever happened happened down by the crank pulley. Not sure what is up at this point.

I'm going to get the cam tower off first, and the manifold - then remove the radiator to make things easier to get to. Doing an A/C delete now, as well. I was going to anyway. I never use it.

Off to buy a new sey of metric allen sockets. Mine have seen better days.

More to follow!

Jeff

Wow, it does look pretty sloppy in there. But the belt looks good - missing teeth down below perhaps?

Must be. I just found one tooth up top. I still need to get in there to find out.

I had a balance shaft seal leaking in there.

Got it apart down to the head. Hopefully tomorrow brings happy-ish news. But I figure not!

I would have gotten farther if not for a kid birthday party to go to.

Well, due to the Government shutdown, I have lots of time on my hands. But money will be tight.

Doesn't that just make sense? I am one of the approximately 800,000 unpaid furloughed Federal Employees.

I have worked on a lot of engines over the years, but never...NEVER...have all of the exhaust header nuts come off this easily.

I will take this as a good sign.

Draining the cooling system now, and then pulling the head. Off to Harbor Freight to get a new valve spring compressor. Then we will see what I am really up against!

More later today.
