On the 40th Anniversary of the Transaxle Line of cars from
Porsche, the company is holding an exhibition as a tribute to one of its most radical shifts into making front engined rear wheel drive sportscars. What started out as a replacement for the 911 line (which clearly didn’t happen), Porsche decided to move into making cars and putting their engines in the conventional place, the front of the car.

The 944 was launched as a mid-range offering, splitting the entry level Porsche 924 and the top of the line 928. This saw the 944 rocket in Porsche’s book as the quickest selling model. It tops the list of maximum sold
Porsche Transaxle at 163,000 units, with whole transaxle range selling 400,000 units
