Problem Removing Ignition Switch
I want to replace the ignition switch in my 944/1. Everything is apart and disconnected up to the point where the switch housing should slide out off the steering shaft, but it won't move. The key is in the ON position and I can turn the wheel 90 degrees and more, so I don't think the shaft is locked. What am I missing? Could there be something still to unfasten or disconnect? Could the bearing race be frozen to the shaft? Suggestions and ideas please!

the actual ignition switch only has one little screw holding it in.
are you trying to remove the whole cast aluminum switch housing? did you remove the pinch bolt on the left hand side? |
This is for the whole die cast switch housing. I haven't reached the switch itself and its single mounting screw. Yes, the allen bolt is removed from the left side.
|
I know it's not very classy but I'd probably just use a gear puller to pull it off.

did you remove the black plastic sleeve around the shaft, its like a spacer to hold the steering wheel a cetain distance from the switch assy
|
Yes, the plastic spacer is off.

Punch it out from the back with a socket extension, just replaced my switch, make sure all the wires are out of the way...ok.

Got the shear bolt out? If so, insert a large flat screwdriver where the shear bolt clamps the housing and drive the screwdriver in with a hammer. Gently. The clamp will spread slightly and should slide right off the steering shaft.
