speedo problem
well its not my speedo exactly is my odometer.
The odometer/trip meter does not work although my speedo does. But it reads a little fast this is not the problem as it has saved me some speeding tickets. But how can I keep service intervals if I don't know the mileage. Has anybody had this problem or know what the problem may be and have a solution. THANX |
Stripped odo gear
never reset the trip odo with the car running do a search on this bbs, there are a few solutions already posted. AFJuvat |
My went bad also, its a common problem. You can find a local shop and have it rebuilt. Since my spedo only went to 85 MPH I bought a rebuilt one from a later model. New spedo goes to 150 MPH even if the car wont. It cost $135.

My speedo is in kilometers but it goes up to 260kph. (160mph)
How ever as I am in a diferent country I will tell you I have had the car up to 230kph. This was done at 5:30am on one of our freeways with no traffic around. Mind you the legal limit is 120kph, so if I had been busted I would be walking for a long time. And I was very impressed. Barry |
Odometer Repair
Here's a site for buying the replacement odometer gear. It includes instructions for installing the new gear:
http://www.klaindustries.net/gearinstr/gear-instr-1.htm http://www.klaindustries.net/odogear/gear.htm Hope this helps, Andrew |
I've got to do this to my 944, just happened. My girlfriend's 968 trip meter does not work but the odometer does, so probably not worth messing with yet! Thanks for the info.
BTW, I love FR's comment "don't be stupid". Actually before I pushed it i thought it could break...and it did! So if you don't use it, it won't break!? |
I believe km's and miles have different gears (number of teeth on the gear)
I couldn't find a supplier for the gear so I bought a km speedo on ebay. That doesn't mean there is no one out there supplying the gear, I may have not looked hard enough. |
That is a good site that shows how to fix the odometer. My question is how do you get the guage section out??? I have looked at my "86 944 cause I have the odometer problem described here and don't see how the guage section is removed.
thanks |
I see this job as a big PITA. I've got bigger problems at this point and getting some "free miles" out of her. Don't really want to become a bad PO to somebody in the future though!

can anybody tell me how to get the panel off so I can take my gauges out on an '86 944. I have a broke odometer, reset it moving, I knew better but mind was elsewhere, There is a good site on here for it but how do you get the trim off to get the screws out????
|
My gear just slipped off of the spindle- a drop of super glue on the gear no longer moves, and working good as new. (if the gear is GOOD that is!) (for pre 85.5) Next my speedo cable replacement project.

Will removal of the 944 speedometer needle require recalibration? None of the procedures I've seen mention this, but the one for the 914 gauge in the Pelican technical articles does.
944 procedure: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-09.htm 356/914/911 procedure: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mult_gauge_repair/mult_gauge_repair.htm |
thanks for the reply and I think I can do all that to take the steering wheel off and the gauges out but how do you remove the horn button to get to the stearing wheel nut??? I am good on mechanic stuff but the trim inside I am real bad on
thanks |
I have the four spoke steering wheel. The horn button is held on by two clips at the bottom and one at the top. I got mine off by pulling the bottom corners out first, then pulling the top. Pick up a Haynes manual if you don't have one, it's in there.

will the instrument panel come out without taking the stearing whell off?
|
I assume you have an 86 951 with the late dash. I thought about trying it with the wheel on, but it would be about 50 times harder if it is possible. You have to pull out the whole trim piece around the cluster (which includes the center vents), and then finagle out the cluster. With the wheel in you will have a hard time getting to the screws, getting the pieces out, and risk damaging the flexible circuit board on the rear of the gauge cluster. Taking the wheel off was the easiest part of the whole thing. Do you have an airbag? That would complicate things.
