mating surfaces and threads need to be acetone clean or the bolts will back out in time.

I've been dealing with these exact bolts for decades and agree you have to pay attention. I long ago gave up on keeping them clean during install (except the bolt head mating surface - crucial), however. Its always a struggle to repack the joints fully and then juggle that thing up into place without the grease getting where you don't want it. Bump the flange? Boom - start over. The joint flops out of the boot and swivels? - boom 3 holes have grease in them. Too much grease or the axle suddenly shoots toward the flange while you're holding it in place to start the first screw? Like a pile driver grease just got shoved all over the flange. It's a nightmare and I just bolt them up at proper torque, then check after a hundred miles or so.
Equally important is getting the reinforcing plates on. Some people ignore those but they're a crucial part of not having the assembly flex during rotation and start loosening fasteners. One question. Other vehicles I've had (the Quattro has 48 of these!) use a serrated washer as a lock washer under the bolt head. Mine had none and looked original. Are there supposed to be washers, or no? Thanks. Doug PS - Porsche dealer had zero on hand at $15 each. Got new ones at the VW dealer for $3.50 each.

No Schnorr washers on the 944 CV joints. The 911 uses them on some years.

Ah - there's the washer name. Thanks. Oddly the Vanagon uses them. To handle its 95hp engine!
