3 piece OPRV

I'm replacing the oil cooler gasket on my 84 and was wondering do I need the alignment tool if I have the 3 piece OPRV?

Yes. You can buy it at Baum Tools.

Make sure you get the metal one. The resin/plastic ones can vary too much due to expansion and contraction of the material and not give the correct alignment.

They may "look" like metal sometimes because they area black or dark grey ABS type plastic. Just be sure it's a metal one an it should be fine. I'd mic it and make sure it matches the drawing V2 has posted above. The plastic one for the new one-piece units I got a while back was several thousandths off on the critical diameters and caused mine to bind and blew the oil filter seal about one second after I fired it up. Puked 3 quarts of fresh oil on the floor.... Grrrr...

Surprisingly , they are cheap from the dealer, would be a good time to upgrade to a one piece OPRV , the alignment tool is different but nevertheless required.

prevailing theory is the change to the one-piece OPRV was done in the event of a repair where the shop did not have the alignment tool for the original 3-piece type valve.

the 3 piece valve alignment is critical - the one-piece valve pretty much aligns itself.

there are literally millions of other cars on the road with the same style OPRV as the 944 3-piece so it can't be all that bad.

thanks for the input i'll purchase the alignment tool from pelican and reinstall my 3 piece valve and cross my fingers everything goes back together smoothly. I got the rusting old headers off without breaking a single bolt it suck to screw this job up on reinstalling the OPRV out of alignment

You do not need an alignment tool. All you need is a magnet on a stick. Use the sleeve as the alignment tool, and tighten slowly, often checking that the sleeve will freely move in and out.
