gas tank interchangability

I have an '83 944 with the typical full fuel tank strong gas smell which I am led to believe is a crack in the top of the tank. I just bought an '86 parts car which appears to have a plastic tank. Will it fit the '83?

Im pretty sure the late offset cars had a larger gas tank so it may not work for you.

Hi it's not a direct replacement.
It's been done, but it requires converting your car to use the later-944 type transmission crossbar, your car may or may not have suitable holes to mount it from.

The metal tank in your 83 may be cracked (repairable) but it is more likely the hoses on top of the tank for the evap system are rotted and leaking.

If possible I'd cancel the order for that 86 tank or try to resell it, and drop your 83 tank and fix it and the hoses.

My 88 924S, which shares the same tank as the early 944, was exhibiting the gas fume smell when it was 3/4 or more full. I suspected a cracked tank, but after removing it found the cause was just old leaking evap hoses on top of the tank.

Replaced them and all is well. Hopefully for another 25 years or so....

I wasn't so lucky, the tank was cracked as well as the 15mm vent hose running from the steel tank to the plastic expansion tank.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid that would be the case!

Rasta's done it. Hope the pics work, but even if they don't this'll give you an idea of what's involved.

Thanks Slam, looks a bit involved. I will see how bad the old one is when I get it down.
