Cayenne Front and Rear Brakes on a 944

I am working on a rear kit to go with my Z06 fronts. I ordered myself a Cayenne 4 piston rear caliper, ($50 shipped on ebay). I believe I have a design that would work with the turbo 300mm rear rotor. Unfortunately, the caliper didn't come with pads, so I'm not positive on the 7.5mm dimension just yet. I also don't know if the caliper will have to be offset inward/outward at all yet. Hopefully I'll know this soon. My co-worker is printing me a 3D version of the bracket for mock-up. It seems like this would be an easy one you could drill at home with a good template. Alternatively, if it works, I could make them for those interested.


EDIT: Just realized the caliper bolt spacing is 136.1mm on here. It's supposed to be 136... Apparently in UG NX 68+68=136.1... I'll correct that eventually.

I don't know yet if the front calipers have the same 136mm bolt spacing and ~113mm mounting radius as the rears. If they do, then I believe these same bracket dimensions should work to mount the 17Z 6 piston fronts to 300mm turbo rotors. The nice thing about this combo is that I believe it might fit with 16" wheels (I don't have any to verify). The 17Z calipers should also easily mount to the 330mm front rotors, and the 18Z Calipers to 350mm rotors.

With all this said, this is only for the 944. The 951 will require a rotated bracket design, and I haven't tried this yet. On the 944, the 77.5mm and 76mm dimensions in the above drawing are larger on the 951.

Not to dissuade you from cool stuff but wondering why not use a more available caliper?
Is it the "cool" bling factor of a monoblock caliper, or do you just want bigger pistons?

If you can live with sliding calipers, why not use some more widely available/inexpensive calipers like off a Ford/GM or something? it's all just hydraulic ratios, regardless of brand.

Cayenne calipers are cheap. I did make adapters for the CTS and Corvette calipers already.

With that said, my Z06 adapters would probably work great with sliding base C6 or C5 calipers...

I did some measuring today. Unfortunately, the backspacing on the caliper isn't right for a simple bracket like this. To mount the bracket on the inboard side of the caliper, the bracket needs to be spaced back from the 944 hub about 3/4". To mount the bracket on the outer side of the caliper, the bracket could only be 1/4" thick, which I think is too thin. The 3/4" spacing seems easier... This could be a separate piece, welded to the bracket, or if you have a mill, all one piece. The good news is that you could use this with a 298mm turbo front rotor. This should allow it to be mounted under stock 951 wheels.

I'll do some CAD and draw a picture tomorrow to better explain. The good news is, I believe most could do this in their garage still with basic tools. I'm still planning to use these on the rear.

Ok, modified the bracket to be simple. This could be done with some accurate drilling no problem. Two pieces of material would be needed. A 6.5"x1.5"x3/8" piece of aluminum and a 3/4"x1"x4" bar of aluminum. Cheap on OnlineMetals.com. I recommend 6061.

Went to the junkyard and picked up a pair of the 18ZR Cayenne Calipers for use with 350mm rotors. Mounted them up today with some scrap I had. I plan to make a proper mount in the next couple weeks. These fit with the 18" wheels no problem. The mounting dimensions are a little different than the rear calipers. I'm not sure if the 17z calipers (for the 330mm rotors) are the same as these or not.

Got my dimensions CAD'd up. *Made from 1.5" square bar aluminum. *Relatively simple... if you have a mill. *I don't have a mill... *But my 20" Clausing drill press does pretty well with aluminum milling. *Not the greatest surface finish, but it will do the trick. * *

As an update. I have purchased a mini mill... It is no Bridgeport, but it is a significant upgrade to the shop. I finished my 18Z front mounts and my rear mounts. The mill makes it a much faster procedure to say the least...

I'm sure I could work out a price if anyone really wants me to make these. It's not a real fast process on the manual mill I have (especially with no DRO), but I don't mind making a few.

In addition, if anyone is interested in a set of early hubs that have the OD turned down to fit Cayenne rotors, I have an extra set of early hubs.
