Repainting Porsche Hood Emblem

About 3 years ago, my ’83 944 was in a fender bender (not my fault!). The original Porsche hood emblem was mangled and was replaced with a genuine part for about $100 from the local dealer. After about 18 months, most of the paint was gone, despite protecting it with Zymol Carbon wax. I contacted the dealer and they said they couldn’t do anything, as it was beyond a year.

How should I paint/repair this?

Had the same experience with one I bought for my 911. Really pissed me off. I expect better quality from a Porsche part. Especially, their emblem.

Fyi the Porsche warranty on parts is 2 years, so if it was like that in 18 months they should have replaced it.

From Porsche.com

"2-year warranty for genuine Porsche parts, exchange parts and accessories, which are used or sold outside of warranty work."

That's unusual, I've never seen one of these lose paint or even fade here in the land of perpetual hot sunshine.

I am very disappointed at the quality of this part, especially since it is the marque symbol, proudly displayed on the front of the car! After spending about $100 on this OE part which didn’t last 18 months, I don’t want to give Porsche another $100. I’m also disappointed that the local dealer told me a year warranty, when, apparently it was 2 years.

I painted the badge with Sharpie brand paint pens. The tip is exactly the size of the small channels. I gently scraped off any misapplied paint with a single-edge razor blade. In person, the red looks like a closer match that it appears in the photo (I intend to, but haven’t clear coated it yet). I don’t know what’s up with the photos rotation, but can’t fix them!

Nice! I love out of the box solutions and that looks fine. If you can find a clearcoat with a UV filter that would be a strong win. Test it by sharpie-ing a piece of metal asap and letting it fully dry so when you find the clear coat you can ensure its compatible. I'd hate for you to hit it with clear coat only to see the sharpie ink wrinkle, bubble or thin out suddenly.

I used a silver "leaving" pen/marker from a hobby shop after repainting my Vanagon grille black to restore the factory look. It worked out well, vs a $300 new grille and looks great. I spent the savings on new rubber for the win....

I used Humbrol enamel paint as used on plastic model aircraft kits, lasted years, applied with brush used for painting model aircraft kits. Nowadays I might try the fineline paint applicators from Hobby Lobby rather than a brush
