A new 924S thread
Progress made. 924S starts, runs and drives but after 10-15 minutes the grayish white smoke starts rolling. Oil pressure is good and temp is normal. I see no signs of oil in the coolant, nor coolant in the oil. I understand leaky injectors can cause this, but i guess my question is how would they leak? Extra fuel in the manifold sucked in on intake? The fact that it takes about 10-15 minutes before it starts flooding the manifold? They have new hats and o-rings but I noticed the "hats" were just a tad longer than the originals. There's no sign of fuel coming from the rail area..or anywhere else for that matter.My next step I suppose is compression testing the cylinders. I imagine given the layout of the water jacketing it's entirely possible a gasket could leak at one cylinder or more without leaking into an oil channel. I'd certainly like to drive it, but without the "Uncle Buck" look to the car.

I had the same denial years ago when I noticed the puffs of white smoke from the tail pipe on my '87 924S--usually a few minutes after starting leaving the driveway.
You have answered your own post recently: Head gasket You might notice a very slight decline of coolant in the reservoir or plugs looking steam cleaned. If you have no record of previous head gasket replacement and additional work, you should just do it this winter and have it ready to drive in the spring. Your 30 year old car will run like new. Additional advice, replace the idle control valve hoses with new and check all components before replacing the intake manifold. If you skip this step, the brittle hoses will require another removal of the intake. J_AZ

....to add to Johns excellent advice, wyit do your AOS seals and fuel lines if you haven’t already.

I appreciate the responses. I've replaced so much over the last 4 months--ECU, strut inserts, FPR, DME, AOS seals, oil, filter, vacuum lines, ignition components..but there's only so much I can do with arthritic thumbs and lower back under a carport--Dirty Harry Callahan "a man's GOT to know his limitations". I'll likely put it in a shop I deal with. I can buy necessary components and they'll do the labor.

I believe I have it sorted out..starts, runs, drives w/ very little vapor. No head gasket leak, thankfully. I have a lot to do over the next 3-4 months but I've added sending the injectors off to Witchunter to the list

As near as I can tell, the headlight mechanism had caught the coil-distributor wire and pulled it out just far enough that it hadn't seated well enough in the coil to send consistent, strong spark. Now that I have it well seated in both, it's running much better. One of those things.
Years ago, I had a '70 Malibu that would die when I made a left turn, but it would start right back up. A real head-scratcher. It ended up being a loose tang of sorts in the solenoid that would swing when I turned. Right turn, it didn't hit anything but a left turn and it would contact ground and kill the primary ignition. |
