Exclamation tension gauge scam on eBay

Someone is passing off what looks like the $15 Krikit belt tension gauge as THE $500 Porsche gauge. Bidding is up to $110. He has made the auction private, so no one can warn the bidders. Beware!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2403458431&category=35625

(or search on "belt tension")

Sent him an email asking why he was selling a $50 aftermarket knockoff as an authentic part

You would have to create a "disposable" eBay identity. Ebay asks for credit card info if you use what they considers a throw away e-mail address. Still you could use a "real" address and just cancel it after you over bid the auction. This has been the source of my recent frustrations with eBay; their lack of persuit of shill bidders.

the tool works, but unreliable dependent upon how you read it. 12 bucks at JC Whitney.

I sent him an email too. I told him that it was pretty slimy what he was doing.
How would we go about notifying e-bay of this fraud?

He must be pretty desperate.......check his other auctions, he's selling his shoes!

Why is it eBay's fault?

That's a good question. With millions of sales per month you would figure that eBay could not authenticate some sales let alone all.

There are a few things that have been recommended that eBay actively pursue. One of these is shill bidding. EBay has the computing capacity to find the data markers for this as well as other frauds and could do something active such as put the auction on hold while the data irregularities are confirmed.

Other bidding rules such as only a prior bidder can bid during the last hour and the seller can not cancel the bid during the last 12 hours as a bidder can't cancel either.

As to this auction for an inexpensive belt tension tool the very fact that such a simple auction was made private is a strong give away. Anyone that searches for Porsche 944 stuff on eBay that finds this auction can not e-mail the bidders and warn them so they can cancel their bid.

Too bad.

The fact that he represented it as the $365 tool is outrageous. Since he purchased it himself he obviously knows that it is not. Then the line about making it a private auction so nobody tries to sell his bidders a cheap knock-off.......that is a classic!

I have an idea! Someone here with the real tool should put up an auction with a picture and state that it is not a cheap knock-off like the other auction.

Just set your reserve for $500 so it does not sell, but. when they see the ad they will retract their bid from that moron.
