discharged battery

I've got a 83 944 and have had no major problems except a recurring battery problem.I've had the car a good ten years and it seems to me that either the batterys are no good or something is wrong with the charging system. The battery I now have is from a chain auto parts store and it's only six mnths old and I have had to recharge it twice in the last three weeks. The light in the dash never comes on and I checked the chargine system with my meter and it say's it 's charging.
Anyone else have this problem?
Should I go for a Sears battery?

Six sounds more like you have an electrical problem somewhere in the system and not a battery problem. Of course that is assuming that your battery reads around 12.5 when the car is not running and around 13.5-14 volts when the engine is running at 1000 rpm. One way you can check is to see if you have a voltage draw from the battery with the car turned off.

Put an multimeter on the battery terminals and measure the load on the battery.

Then start pulling fuses and relays, watch for the volts to increase. You should then be able to find the culprit.

In my case it was a poorly wired aftermarket radio that was draining my battery.

This probably is not your problem, but it has happened before, make sure your turn signal is canceled when the car is off. This will illuminate the signal lights and drain your battery. Just a thought.

Had a bad cooling fan thermo switch that kept the fan running after the engine stopped until the battery was totally discharged. Happened within a day of buying the car and may have been intermittent before, don't know.
