Help with trailing arm size of 924 & 944

I'm doing a VW Split screen brake conversion using Porsche 944 discs all round. The rear supposedly requires either early/pre 86 944 steel arms or 924 Turbo ali ones as they're the same size and keep the correct track width. I've seen some 924S ones for sale and I'm getting mixed signals from the seller (and a few others I've asked) and my fellow VW friends who seem to think 924S are a wider track than the Turbo version.

Can anyone clarify if they're the same or not to put me out of my misery?

Many thanks

Dean

The 924S trailing arms are a wider track, as evidenced by the longer half shafts connecting the transaxle to the stub axle. Stick to the 83-85/1 944 arms.

I think you are getting confused by the change from steel to aluminum (ali) arms and the change from early to late offset, they didn’t happen at the same time. Also just to be clear here, all 944’s had the same track, it’s just the offset that changed in 87, the track remained the same throughout. All 944’s before 1985.5 used steel rear arms, if you want ali arms you will find them only on a 85.5 and onwards 944 or a 924S. All the ali arms are the same, however in 87 they changed the hubs on the arms to accommodate a later offset wheel. If I were in your position I’d look for a set of 1985.5 to 1986 rear ali arms from a 944 as they likely are the correct configuration for your vw, but I’m basing that on what I think you are looking for, I have no VW experience.

924S trailing arms are aluminum.

My bad, I’ve corrected my post, thanks :)

924s is an entirely different car to the 924 or 924 turbo.

You want steel trailing arms from the 77-82 924, or 82-85 944. The arms themselves are the same as on an IRS beetle But there are other hardware differences that make them 944 specific
