Car cuts out after 10 mins
Hello All,
Car runs fine for 10 minutes and then cuts entirely electrically. Try and turn the key and nothing. Wait 5 minutes, car starts OK and you can then drive again for 10 minutes. Battery light always up on dash Check connection at the alternator and it was loose. Bad earth? Bad battery? Alternator? Leads? Car is charging at 10 volts. |

Charge-lamp on means alternator isn't charging battery.
Get alternator tested. Should be putting out +14v |

Correct. "Car charging at 10 volts" isn't charging. You're essentially running the car off the battery instead of the alternator until it goes flat and cannot run the car any longer. After you let it sit for a few minutes, the battery comes back enough just to let the cycle repeat. Keep doing that long enough and the battery will be flat enough to where it will no longer start.

There are two wires fir the alternator and they can only go on one way but my alternator has a capacity/resistor. Where does the spade connection go to?

The male spade sticking out from inside the alternator between the capacitor and the terminal block.
Probably the only place you could connect it within reach?

Logically, I would put the spade to the negative bolt but it slips away as the spade is much larger than the negative bolt. Out of interest, I tried to connect it to the positive bolt but will not attach either. Maybe I find another earth in reach and try that.
I will also will swap the alternators over. |
