Ignition Coil faulty? 924S 1988

Ok..so going through Haynes manual to track down lack of power/revs issue......got to the ignition coil section, chapter 5.

Popped off the cover and tested it.

Clarks also suggest this:

Ignition Coil Resistance Check

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms. Mine is Zero ohms.

Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms. Mine is 5400 ohms

In any event the first test came up with zero ohms..................

So question is, with a faulty ignition coil what are the symptoms?Haynes suggest a wide range of issues from under their troubleshooting guide, section 14 'Engine lacks Power'.................which is me.................

Here are some pictures.....looks original to me...plus 30 years!

Comments please!

Thanks,

Michael

It sounds like you're on the correct path. You seem to have followed the proper diagnostic path. Keep us posted.

You see "zero" ohms because your meter isn't capable of resolving resistance at 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.

If you tested the coil with the wires (brown & green) removed and you got "zero" ohms chances are the coil isn't bad, it's just your meter.

Check the DME relay, fuses, etc. Go to Clark's Garage and follow the troubleshooting procedures as an aid.

I check the spark. It should be blue and jump at least half an inch outside the cylinder.
