Thinking about going to the Dark Side

My car is running perfectly right now and is driving like a new car but, I find my self absolutely DROOLING at every 911 I see. I mean like bady, seriously bad. Much like the way I used to look at 944's before I had one- only much worse. I'm seriously thinking of selling my car and picking up an early 80's 911. Any words of wisdom? Am I nuts? The car would be a daily driver.

It's not really the dark side. More like the dark side of a brownie... which one you may ask, well let's extend this metaphor.
A brownie is good on either side. However, the frosted side doesn't last as long.
Ok enough.
78-83 911's rule (personal opinion) as far as 911's go. 3.0L motors are vitually bulletproof and there are many upgrade/performance mods that can be made. But, there are alot of service issues that one must deal with when owning one, especially if it is to be a daily driver. 944's on the whole make better daily's. 911's yes are great cherries, but they're just that metaphorical icing on the cake...What i'm saying is, don't sell your 944 just to buy a 911. Save, save, save and buy the SC of your dreams when you can. I've seen nice ones go for under 10k.

I'd heard the same thing about the 3.0 motors. Unfortunately, I would have to sell my car, since there would not be enough room stalls in the barn if you know what I mean.

83sc w/targa top= drooool

Give me a plain jane '78 black/tan coupe. No targa roofs, whale tales, or other junk...just the original Fuchs and I'd be happy.

Tea tray spoilers rock, but a turbo tail on a narrow body non-turbo is horribly out of place. Unfortunately, it seems to be way too common.

Get the huge fender flares, alpine white w/ matching fuchs, and the turbo whale tail w/ rubber lip. AND NO TINT ON THE WINDOWS. And for reliability the mechanical timing belt tensioner.

I've only backed one out once. I find how it hops around in back when driven hard appealing. It is one of those cars that rewards a good driver and penalizes the bad. Have you driven one Mr. Moderator?

Assuming you're asking about early 911s, I've driven a couple of SCs, a 69 S and an RS, the S was on track. I've ridden in several on track also.

I like them, but think they're over priced and over appreciated.

I would personally own one if I could afford 3 or 4 cars.

What I like the most is getting on power out of a very late apexed tight turn, around an increasing radious turn. Also enjoy the throttle response in the earlier (and smaller) engines. I don't think I could own a 911 that was as fast as my turbo for at least $25k or so, and it still wouldn't be as civilized, smooth, easy to drive or live with. I may get one someday, not before I graduate from college though... The thing is, I wouldn't want to live with an early 911 every day, and it's just not as satisfying to own a car to only drive a few days out of the week IMO.

Ofcourse everyone has different needs, and preferences so your milage may vary.

Shhh: don't tell anyone (especially my wife), but I'm considering owning a 996 in the future. Talk about the REAL dark side!

The 996 is probably the most underappreciated cars of the 911 series. HOWEVER: even though many purists shun this car, it has the most technology, has tons of power, and is one of the best handling street 911's. And you can pick up a used one in the $40k to $50k price range.

Porsche Crest

Well to each his own but for my time and money the 951 will take it all the way. From time to time I play with the idea of getting a boxter s as a second because it is a great looking convertible. The 911s are over rated as far as I am concerned.

1.2gees- X-girfriends parents in college had an 84 with really high milles. I wasn't really a big Porsche car fan at the time (I had an Alfa Spider) but I remember how much faster that car was than my Alfa (pissed me off- expecially when I was in my car and my x was in the 911).

They seem over priced to me as well; but I have the patience of a Buddist monk. I'll find a deal if it kills me!
