I have one out of a 84 that I did a 5-speed conversion on. The only difference that I know of would be for the speedo. If you are interested drop me a line

you need one from an '85.5 - '91

IIRC the 'earlies' and the 924S don't have mounting bolt holes in the top

plus there is no speedo 'hall' sender that the 'lates' need

Glen,
I can read e-mail at work but can't respond. i got your mail today. The tranny I have is from a early car. You will be in the same shape as with the 924S. You can make the mount work, but not the speedo. I have put early tranny's in late track cars before.

Todd, just saying thanks for the leg work on the auto tranny, I was able to piece one together to make the deadline. I appreciate the help, so far it's running great, I'll let you know if he has any problems with it though!!!

the 944 auto transaxle is 2 'pieces'...the very common 010 VW automatic 'tranny' (from the '70s, '80s and '90s) connects to the 087 audi 'final drive' (diff) with just 4 nuts...and I read the 'governor' (in the final drive) should go with 'valve body' (in the tranny) cuz they are matched. so I'm curious about just what you "pieced together". did you mix & match?

let us know and thanks

Hi Tom, the oil pump drive on this early tranny seized due to a bad tranny(it was sucking metallics), that in turn caused the oil pump drive shaft to snap at the torque converter. due to time constraints and a limited budget, my friend opted for a somewhat local used tranny, well after the 3 hour drive they didn't have one but did have a "good" used transmission w/ a bad diff., we took the gamble and sure enough the tranny side was good, with his diff. being a good one, we picked up a complete seal kit and put the two halves together, and put in a different good used torque convertor since the other developed metallic flake in it due to the broken shaft spinning against itself.

very kewl ! I suspected this is what you did...I did the same. I still have a small leak and need to pull it and check seals, yadda yadda, but it's quiet and shifts smoothly.

how is your friend's holding up?

It's holding up well so far. Luckily it wasn't my first auto tranny to play with but I really do hate working on them, they're nothing like the std.'s I hope your not dripping ATF from the torque converter area. I dealt with that on an '88, the front pinion bearing had gone bad.
