well, do you have an outrageous rapping coming out of the bellhousing? Mine sounds like the # 4 rod is going to come out of the block! Needless to say, I'm happy thats not it.

Mine just died. Wasn't even driving it hard! Clank, clank, clank. Any advice on how much I should expect to pay for a repair? Will a used flex plate hold up if I go that route or should I just part it out or go new? What else should I fix if I do this? Thanks!

If you go the used route I have the dampner and flex plate in good shape for a very reasonable $150 shipped for the pair. If there are no other mechanical problems and are installed properly they should provide many miles of use. I personally would not spend $800 to $1000 on parts and @ $500 for labor(unless you do it yourself) on an auto, this would be a nice time to upgrade to a 5sp.

Just bought an auto car that was "some assembly required." It came with a brand new (well factory rebuilt) torque tube and flex plate. Totally wish I'd just sold the parts to fund a manual conversion. Convert now! Don't go forward with fixing the auto....very disappointed in the automatic version of the 944.

I agree with you. This is the 2nd major job since I have been the owner and I suspect there were othere before this. Had to replace a differential seal requiring a shop to drop the transaxel and 10hrs labor. Got a qoute for ~1700 for a new flex damper and labor, less than expected, but not really fixxing the problem. It still has a whine on decelleration and only a matter of time before another seal or nbearing goes.

Would swapping out with a triptronic transaxel with overdirve from a 968 or other car make any sense? It would lower the revs and stress on the torque tube, flex plate, engine, tourque convertor, etc. Would it bolt right up, and how much would one cost? Is it just the shift linkage that is different?
