Question Maximum 944 rpm's

I recently completed a lot of work on the engine of my early 1985 944. New timing belt, water pump, belts, hoses, distributor cap, wires, seals, the works. When I start out in 1st gear, the most rpm's I can get before she winds out is 5800. Is that typical?
This is a non-turbo, of course.

That sounds about right. The DME has a rev limiter in it.

Hi, rev limiter should kick in at 6300 or 6500 rmp. Can't remember which one but it is one of the 2. My car in first will go to 6500 and the limiter will kick it out then. It would still climb if not for the limiter. So you should be getting some more rpm from your motor. Maybe your timing is a tooth off? My 2 cents worth.

He would have much more problems if his timing belt was off a tooth.

Not so. The prior owner of my 944 had his timing belt break and had a non porcshe wrench put it back together and I couldn't figure out why the car was very vibrating at 5 grand and above. When the water pump started to leak because of the timing belt being put on too tight I realized that not only was the balance belt a tooth off but the timing was also a tooth off.
