WTB - Transaxle gears (tall 5th gear pair), from early 944.

If anyone has a bad early 944 transaxle with an undamaged and unworn (.729 ratio) 5th gear set, I might be interested in buying just those gears (& synchros, if required). I don't actually plan on tearing into my trans anytime soon. But if the price is right I will buy them now so I have them on hand when the time comes for replacing the clutch. Most are looking to go shorter with 5th gear, so I'm figuring there should be no problem with availability, for what I'm looking for.

I might even consider an even-up trade for my shorter turbo 5th gear set.

I have a 5th gear that is out. I have a bunch of parts from a couple of transmissions that I pulled apart that had bad ring gears.

Great shape, $75

Thanks

C'mon Ed, I just hooked you up with the turbo kit/balancing dude. There's a guy here from MI that is listing a complete early transaxle with wasted ring & pinion for 50 bucks. I'll go 50 shipped, on just the 2 gears - that's tops.

Oops, I think I may have got you mixed up with a different Ed from Ohio. I appreciate you working with me on the price though. But I'm not 100% committed to this gear-swap job yet, for 2 reasons. One is that I've never had one of these transaxles apart, so I have no familliarity with what is supposed to go where, inside of it. And the other is that damn saying that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I am afraid that if I buy the gears, I might bich up and back out of doing the conversion for fear of screwing something up, and then I won't be able to unload them. I'm still thinking about it though.

I have to hit my buddy up. I only have an open one. The LSD I have here is going in his trans and the open is coming out.

My feeling about the the LSD, in general, is that because of the work involved to do it right, find a trans with lsd, you will be better off in the end.

On the 5th gear. It is not bad. About a 1.5 hour job. Too bad you are not closer. You could bring the trans over and we could do it at my place. Kind of a lunch and learn.

Ed

Ed, PM me when you get a chance about that open diff, I was just curious about the price of a LSD. The transaxle has a broken open diff in it currently.

How far are you from the PA border, Ed? That's about 250 miles from me. I would consider making the run if you are not too much farther than that. It would be worth it for me, to have help from someone who knows what they are doing, opening up the gear box.

Sorry, I am up in Cleveland right by the airport. A good bit off the border.

Thanks

That sounds like a lot more than I need , or want, for that matter. Nice to know that you are fairly close though. I lived in laurel (only like 15 miles away) from 88 to 92.

Yea. that's too far. I guess I'll have to tackle it on my own. Are the 2 gears the ONLY things that need to get swapped in/out? And are there any seals/gasket that need to be replaced, when performing this procedure?

Ed, It's been more than 2 weeks now since you said that you sent out the gears, but I have not received them yet. I did not get a response from the PM that I sent you 4 or 5 days ago, inquiring about a tracking# for the package. You didn't send it as a posted parcel, did you? That usually takes a relatively long time.
