Shipping UPS to Canada

I'm having a bad experience and wanted to see what the consensus of the Pelican guys was. Just asking because I don't want our brothers from the frozen north to be out of reach with parts support.
Shipping UPS to Canada has proven very expensive for me. It only cost me $28 to ship an item from the UPS Store here, but cost much more to actually get it across the border and into the hands of a Canadian/Canadien customer. So now I've had to pay another $36 to return the package because the customer didn't want to pay the high fees, taxes, duty, surcharge, whatever you want to call it. I don't blame the customer at all for this. I didn't know that Canadians were facing such high fees when receiving UPS shipped items from the US. I'm told it's far better to use the US Post Office to ship items to Canada? True? Thoughts? Warn others? Best standard operating procedures when shipping to Canada? Let's hear from some Canadians.

ALWAYS USPS.

UPS (and other courier companies; FedEx is pretty bad too) aren't the way to go. I've specified USPS for just about everything I buy from the US since I had a couple of particularly bad experiences with UPS.

Yes USPS only is first choice and if no other option then Fed Ex. Never use UPS.

I have been buying / shipping stuff for my car the last 5 years from the USA and literally it must be close to 100 times and by far it has always been cheaper using USPS. Sometimes I have to pay duty and sometimes not, hit or miss. This past summer I probably had 20 shipments and paid extra duty at my door once. When I do it is not nearly as bad as UPS or Fed Ex.

We have all been stung by UPS up here once or twice and that is why we are of this opinion.

Conclusion : Everyone I know in the PCA club etc.. who buy south of the border all have the same opinion------- USE the US postal system !!!

I Hope this helps.

Luckily, I'm 1 hour from the UPS store State side so I only pay HST on the stuff when I cross the border and in the last 50+ trips I never paid "duty" even when the guy ask if it was for the Porsche...

When you order, from Canada, something from PP the his a warning that says they do not recommend to use the Courier service across the border.

+1 on USPS. Their flat rate boxes, in particular, are a good deal for sender and receiver.

By the way, if you are wondering about the nature of these charges from UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc, they normally have a flat rate brokerage fee of roughly $20, plus the taxes on what you're importing which they charge in every case. $50 on a $100 item is not at all uncommon, as you say.

USPS isn't always the answer either. I had a pair of headgaskets get lost on the way to BC and they were never located. I no longer use UPS for anything. I sent a 944 rear diff to Toronto and got a bill a week later for the extorsion fee involved through the UPS broker. I did pay their extorsion fee but told the UPS guy on the phone that I would never use UPS for anything and I have not used UPS since and I ship a fair amount of items. Now I specifically use Fedex or the USPS for everything.

I got the package back from UPS this morning at about 8:45 am. Unbelieveable.
It's going out US Post Office today. This saga started before my first post, which was Nov 24.

I would doubt their claim about trying to deliver twice... Like I'm waiting for a package and I don't care to arrange for alternative delivery like to the neighbor after you sign the back of the card

UPS & FedEx just love to screw to senders/receiver when it goes across the border. They can always blame the other side.

If you use USPS no problem and no extortion "bonding" charges.

I can't disagree JJ.
The export paperwork ( or should I say, "EXTORT paperwork!") said I shipped the package out on Nov. 16. Took them till Dec. 6th to return it.
I've learned my lesson.

USPS is THE way to go!

However, if you need to send something fast you can use UPS IF you pay for the premium service...it removes the brokerage fees from the tail end...

UPS ain't that bad

For my Pelican parts I use USPS and wait the roughly 3 weeks for it to arrive after clearing customs. The extra costs are typically $5 brokerage and 5% GST.

If I need it in a hurry I ship UPS Worldwide expedited., This is expensive, but it arrives in a matter of days and is there are no extra costs. Part cost + expedited shipping is still often less than the local dealer price especially on BMW parts.

The other alternate is a US shipping outlet. This is cheap shipping but still 5% GST, gas, and 8 hours of driving round trip.

People get excited about shipping costs, but then complain about the price of goods in Canada. Somehow they seem related. While the UPS surprise hurts, there are alternatives.
