Question Possible tire/wheel sizes

I have a 1980 911SC Targa. Currenty has 16" wheels.
I am having the car lowered and basically stiffer, performance suspension change over.
I want the widest tire I can get on the car in 17". Need to know what offset on the wheel, both front and rear. Please suggest tire size to get the maximum width tire. Thanks in advance to anyone who can make recommendation that has been proven.

Odd forum but here is an answer
With a lot of negative camber and rolled fenders and work on the oil lines in the rear we can running 255/40/17 in front and 275/40/17 in the rear.
Most people max out at 245 front and 275 rear.
offset you want is 23 to 30 in front and about 15 in the rear.
The prototype is using the 9x16 Turbo Fuchs in the rear with 265 tires and the 951 8x16 Fuchs in the front with 245 tires.

Greg
PS not all tires are the same size even though they have the same size stamped on them, especially the R type Hoosiers etc.
RA1, Hankook Z214 and Kumho710 275's fit but we had problems fitting the 275/40/16 Hoosiers
