Honestly,
If I were you I'd drop the extra coin and go for the full-rebuilt unit, here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/1030/POR_1030_VENTAC_pg1.htm#item5

More expensive but less headaches to deal with...I've been using a rebuilt Denso from Pelican for a few months and couldn't be happier with it.
AC makes all driving so much nicer!

Thanks Spence,
Got a local replacement / reman and already installed it.
So as you were, and thanks to all!
Cheers
Chris

Since you guys are running rebuilt compressors, are you also running 134a freon? If yes, how is the system holding up?

Yes, running 134a.

The shop around the corner from me has been doing my cars for over 10 years now, off and on. They got me a recon'd compressor with ester oil and used their old R12 pipes to put 134a in the system without using the R134a adaptor kit.

I had the old R12 system running 134a since May, and it worked well until it didn't. Traced the leak to the compressor, replaced it and now it's up and running again. We're in the heat in the Valley here (low 100's) and so far so good.

Is it cold? Yes.

Is it as cold as R12? No. Let's say it's fridge cold, not freezer cold.

But ultimately, does it beat not having A/C?
Well, as V2 Rocket says, it's a whole other experience... : )

i am also running r134 with my rebuilt, i drained out all the oil it shipped to me with and replaced with ester oil (compatible with both r12 and 134).

i had all my ac hoses rebuilt years ago so all the rubber is fresh within the last 5 years or so. i am using my aftermarket condenser instead of the porsche piece.

holding up nicely, so much nicer to drive while not being hot..
