Wire fried

So I was putting my throttle body back after cleaning it, and started looking at my wires at the 14 pin section on front left side. I found one that looked very oxidized but then it looked burnt. I've chased it so far for 3 feet and I'm going to have to go further. Goes anyone know what this goes to, I kind of going to have to work from the source and back at a curtain point. Thanks

Not just fried, all of them will be corroded. You will need to rewire.

You should consider rewiring the harness...I had similar looking degraded/corroded wires ruining all the way down to the starter, alternator, and oil sensors. I re-wired the harness completely. Intermittent start, charge, poor voltage...due to moisture and heat on this harnesss. It goes down in front of the engine block and age takes its toll...get the 12$ plastic cover also.

The two wires (Yellow) which join at pin #14 goes to the starter (big wire) and starter valve. The pin #10 two slots down is blk with yellow stripes goes to the starter; it is alos in a second picture. Pin #1 goes to the Alternator and is blue.

The Red wires at the Jump/Hot post in front of the 14 PIN connector goes down in the same harnesss, so check that wire as well as the three that go from the jump post to the CEP.

You need to get a wiring diagram for your Model Year.

Does anyone have the above figure diagram for the 1980 that they can post for me. I get my manual from the Porsche site but for the wiring they only go down to 1984 models and up, or where is the best place to get it. Thanks

I don't have the diagram, but have a list for the '79, the '80 is similar 14 PIN Block Top harness:
Pin 1 Blue wire can look black goes to ALT D+
Pin 2 blu/blk goes to Oil pres
Pin 3 blu/yel to cool temp
Pin 4 blu/wht to oil pres
Pin 5 blu/grn to cool temp
Pin 6 grn/blu to oil level
Pin 7 red/wht SAV (if two wires the other is for WUR: '79)
Pin 8 empty
Pin 9 blk to AC stays above like (pin 7 wire)
Pin 10 blk/yel to Starter 16
Pin 11 empty
Pin 12 empty
Pin 13 empty
Pin 14 Yellow (two wires) Big goes down below Starter 50 and small gauge to the ig switch Start contact through the CEP

On the pin block you can order them from 928 intl. You can find the pin hole number adjactant to the hole when looking very close. Odd on one side and even on the other. A reference point...Pin 14 with the two yellow wires in one male pin are at the front right side of the pin block.

I re-wired mine, it looked like yours...
Jon

Get the set of CDs from Roger at Home - 928s R Us Porsche Parts Store they have wiring diagrams for all models, sadly the early ones are something funky, current flow or something like that, not real intuitive to read.

Take the file for your year off the CD to a Kinko's type place and have it printed on a large format printer. like a 17x30 sheet.

TXL is the type of wire I think is best, high temp etc.

BTW the wire brand Painless, does not refer to the price.

Do not buy wire from the hardware store. You need auto/marine grade for high heat and of suitable gage.

It's not a hard job is it looks. I also only replaced wires that were broken, I left the others intact. Just lay it out on a large table and replace one by one, then wrap it all up in silicone tape. It vulcanizes on itself and seals really good and will not harden. Yes, it handles high heat just fine too.

Here's what I did on my Euro and it worked out perfectly. I still need to create a write up as well.

Yes, NAPA is where I got my wires as well as large copper crimps for the Big red Alt lead. Marine wires are usually rated for same as Auto; but, you need to assure temp rating on Marine wires. I found a large roll of silicon tape at a good price from Duluth Trading company prior to my work.

@928 Bro: make sure about using proper gage wires and suitable crimp fasteners...and get the $12 cover.

I was able to save my red wire insulator cover. I was able to fish everything through 1 by 1. Red wire from alt to starter is perfect and alt to top connection post is in awesome shape except 3 inches from post. thinking of just taking the insulation there and just shrink wrapping it(the wire is fine) it's just the insulation. All I have left is the 3 - top sensors water temp ,air valve, and cold start valve

Good work.

How did you get the wires to all fit into the 14 pin connector?

I snatch-up lengths of 944 wiring harnesses when the opportunity arises.
The wires are the same diam, color and material as used in 928.
So its a very cheap source of the wire for all kinds of repair needs.
