1978 928 oil pressure
My bar gauge seems to read correctly but the idiot light for oil pressure now flickers at times. Any thought how to check this?

Check the 2 wires on the oil gauge sending unit for grounds and shorts and bare spots.

Oil Pressure -
Hey Thalfon - Does your oil pressure gauge gradually drop as your engine warms up ?
Don't know if this helps but along with checking for a damaged (bare spot touching ground) wire going to the low pressure warning light - A while back a friend had purchased a high mileage 80 model 928 that had been parked for many years. Once we had it running, I noticed that his oil pressure gauge needle would immediately peg and stay at the top as soon as the key was turned on. Once warmed up, his oil pressure warning light would flicker at idle but the gauge showed max pressure. It turned out that the two wires to the gauge sending unit were connected backwards. My wife and I just returned from a couple of weeks in Estes Park, Co. Great trip but got some strange looks with Texas plates on Miss Purdy. Now that we're back home and everybody is basically on "Wuhan Coronavirus" semi- house arrest, it sucks ![]() Good Luck - Michael

JK McDonald,
The oil pressure gauge seems to work fine and operates normally. The idiot light only seems to flicker when am at higher rpms, never at idle. I have not been under the car yet to check the condition of the wires but, no one has worked on the car since this started to happen. Todd |

Sending Unit -
Hey Thalfon - If I remember correctly - the oil pressure sending unit not only had it's two wires connected backwards but the sending unit itself was determined to be defective.
Just a thought but you might remove the sending unit and attach a mechanical gauge as a pressure test of the oil pump circuit. Some owners have also changed to a slightly thicker oil. I run 20W50 in the Texas heat. Good Luck - Michael

JK McDonald,
I will check the wires and then hook up a mechanical gauge before I buy a new sender. Thanks for your insight. Todd |
