That foam looks stock. None of the cars I've dealt with had that much foam remaining, but I could tell that the foam had been there in the past.

porschedavid,
About the only thing left in MY vents is the glue used to secure the original foam in the vents. Most of the foam has previously exited the vents when the heater/AC was turned on. If the foam is blocking the air passage, you could trim it out of the way. I've never seen a 928 with that much foam still remaining.

My cars no longer have the foam. They work just fine as far as I can tell.

I agree with John. Most of my sharks were foamless - I ended up shop vaccing it our to cut down on the dead foam dust everywhere. Never had a noticable issue.

If your AC/heater is not directing the air flow to where you want, you might need to check the vacuum manifold under the console that controls the vacuum actuators that move to redirect the air. Access that from the driver's side panel. Remove it and find the multi-colored vacuum lines that go to each actuator, check that they hold vacuum. Additionally, check the black rubber vacuum manifold itself for cracks and splits.
