1982 928 runs without fuel pump on

Car starts right up when the fuel pump is off, then instantly kills when the pump is turned on. I have the pump jumpered at the relay. The car did sit for over 10 years and runs OK with pump off, not good but OK. So far I replaced spark plugs, all vacuum lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel lines around fuel tank. I cleaned the fuel injectors and cold start valve injector. Also verified none of the injectors or cold start valve are stuck open. How can that car run without the fuel pump running?

You could have a ground issue that is back feeding power to the fuel pump. Check and clean all your grounds first.

There also could be a problem with the defroster relay. Remove it and see if the symptom still occurs.

Sorry it took so long. Checked all grounds, glad I did a couple were in bad condition. Pulled the defrost relay, didn't seem to change anything. Now I am wondering if the return fuel line is clogged which would build up too much pressure at intake.

No worries. It's not unusual for the return to get clogged, and it's pretty easy to check.
