Electrical connector cleaning

Hi,
I am still having trouble with my air flow meter. When it is connected the car does not start. When it is not connected the car starts but billows white smoke out the tail pipe. I am thinking that maybe the electrical connector is corroded. Any suggestions on how I might go about cleaning this connector while it is still on the car. I have some ideas but wanted to see what others think before I proceed.
Any constructive thoughts welcome!
Tim
