5 speed 1984 928
So I went into town to get gas and noticed a 928 for sale. Being a Porsche person I just had to stop. Hmmm Not my favorite color-gold. Brown interior looks god. And wait that is a manual transmission! I go around to the other side where there is a note that says Original owner, picked up in Germany, No winters ( I am in Michigan) all service records and books. 72K original miles. No price just "Best Reasonable offer." Since the small town of Richland Michigan is very close to Gull Lake where BIG MONEY lives owner probably knows just what he has so I doubt that it will go cheap but could be a very very nice 84 928. Doing a quick walk around the only exterior defect I saw was a small clear coat lift 1/2 moon near the spoiler. 2 names and phone numbers given. 1. Tom@(269)217 4709 and Bill@(269) 841 0520 Eastern time zone so keep that in mind ifyou are interested. No I am not Tom or Bill and don't know them.

Sounds like a very clean car. There are a few sites you can check prices on. Maybe Hemming's or some of the insurance companies that specialize in exotic cars. Maybe Hagerty insurance I think has a rating depending on condition.
|
According to Hagerty, my car is worth $23,000 in good condition.
Fair condition $10,000 Concours $70,000 Excellent $44,000 |
The big questions are:
Does it run? How long ago on the timing belt / water pump replacement? How long ago have fuel & ps lines been replaced? What condition is the int - dash & seats esp? The results of these ques can have a major impact on price. Paying full price on a car that looks good but has these needs will quickly turn expensive. |
Thing about the 928 is that the market is very THIN, almost no really nice cars get sold, and the rest may sit for sale for a long long time.
OTOH if I was shopping, I would be checking on EVERYTHING good+ cond that I run across. Start with the VIN and do some searching, if you are local ask your mechanic if they know the car. First time you talk to the owner, know your limits and be ready to buy. **Make a cash offer with the owners spouse watching. |

yea i've had people ask me if it was for sale when i take it out - now that i am selling it no one is asking to see it - and harborman ..haggerty also says mine is worth $23,000, but i'm asking less than half that ...still no sale - so either my car is not in the condition i think it is or those valuations are off...a bit - it's a niche car and there's only so many people willing to take on a 38 year old car - doesn't matter though as my wife and i are planning a short trip the end of october and the 928 is our preferred mode of transportation

I am the second owner of my 928S. It had 37K miles on it and had not been driven for some years. So the car was like new but I had to do maintenance on it. All original paint, floor mats, etc. I now have 75K miles. My car is all stock. |
hey harborman - sorry if my post made it sound like your car isn't worth what haggerty says - that was not my intention - i was just saying those valuation things are sort of off...a bit - these cars have a very limited audience (and getting smaller) so selling one is sort of hit or miss - i actually think my car will sell better locally than online - in person people can see the whole car...both it's positives and it's negatives - i feel online..i have to describe every flaw so someone without eyes on it won't be surprised - unfortunately here in the denver area i don't think there are many people looking for one of these
