What's the difference between the European and US versions of the 4.5 16v? I've read that the US version sports 220hp while the Euro has 300hp. Emissions equipment and engine management? Can the US motor be upgraded to Euro specs?

NOTICE! YOU ARE BETTER OFF POSTING ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS IN THE 944 FORUM BECAUSE IT GETS ABOUT 100 TIMES THE TRAFFIC OF THE 928 FORUM!! I PRONOUNCE THIS FORUM D.O.A.!
(don't post in the 911 forum though... they don't think anything with a front engine is really a Porsche ![]()

Engine specs
The 16v Euro model did not begin producing 300hp until the 1980 model year. Prior to that, it was rated at 229.
The 84-86 Euro models (still 16v) produced 310hp with a 4.7L engine. US 16v models: 77-79: 219hp 80-82: 220hp 83-84: 234hp (4.7L) Beginning in 1985, US models used a 5.0L engine, producing 288hp. Hope that helps. Try this site |

The difference in hp was due to different compression ratio. Euro had higher hp but lower torque and the USA model was the reverse.
