Question Igntion troubles?

I recently bought a 1985 Porsche 928s and have been fixing it up. One problem I seem to be stuck on is that I cannot get the engine to turn over. The key turns and it makes a cranking noise of a sort but it just wont start. If anyone knows what could be the problem or if i should completly replace the ignition system (wires, distributer, plugs, etc.) or if you have the same problem what have you done to fix it.

- Thanks

Your problem could lie in several areas:

1. No spark
2. No fuel
3. No compression

Checking for spark and fuel are the easiest, so do that first.
You can check for spark by connecting on of the plug wires to a timing light. It should light up off and on to show proper spark is getting to the plugs.

To check fuel, first see if you can hear a faint buzzing noise coming from under the rear bumper. That's the fuel pump.

If the fuel pump is working, check to see if you can hear your injectors clicking. The noise should be regular. In other words, if the clicking from the injectors seems random, your fuel injection brain may be dead. ($$$)

I assume your battery is fully charged.

There are other things thay may be wrong, but these things are where you should start checking.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for those hints but I was just out side and i found a Viper alarm system under the seat unplugged and have been doing some research, and supposedly it has a INNER LOCK on the ignition or what not in the fuse box. I dont know if this could be the problem or not also thanks for the help and if any one has any experience with viper alarm systems 300 ESP please respond. Thanks Iggy Ill check that also. I have heard about the buzzing and i checked that recently that is ok, and there is a little less then a quarter of gas in the tank but it may be old. maybe 2 years old it could have done some damage yes? But i will check the injectors hoping that it is not that since I dont have too much money to spend on one or itll be sitting there for a bit with me just dreaming about it running

not a normal cranking noise ?
