Altenator keeps burning up?

Fortunately this happened during the PPI and the PO replaced it. Now the new one has burnt up. That's two altenators in less than one month. What could be causing this?

My wrench confirmed that this is the correct altenator.

Tiring not to be too sarcastic, but reading your other posts would lead me to believe you have a lot of electrical issues that need to be addressed and anyone of them could be the cause to a failed alternator.

“There is a cluster of grey wires in the bottom right compartment of my 84 928S fuse box. Any ideas what these wires are for? I just toasted them.”

The only gray wires I know of are behind the fuse panel, they are all gray. Take and post a few picture, they will help a lot.

“One of them is the driver rake adjustment. The switch is bad and I tried to gently bend the soft copper internals, but ended up blowing a fuse.”

I think you know what will fix this one (new switch)!
What is the “Driver Rake”?

Looked over your Kart pic's, I have confidence that these fixes shouldn't be out of your league! Dang all those broken Kart parts

M.Max,

This 928 BBS is like a ghost town, and all I get is you. Not to be sarcastic, but thanks for all of your good advice. I do like your links.

The rake adjusts the seat back. I have taken a good switch from the passenger side and put it into the driver rake slot. I also removed the copper pieces from the bad switch and put them into the passenger side. So now the passenger is stuck with the rake in the position I left it.

If enough people would visit this ghost town of a BBS, I probably would learn how to re-mold the copper pieces so that the switch will work. I guess I will figure it out myself or BUY new switches.

Are you going to Sharkfest 2003?

Edit: oh yeah, the alternator is failing due to over-heating, not an electrical short. I was hoping others could tell me this is a common problem and to fix it you...

"All I get is you", LOL, thanks!

Sharkfest you bet! I have to do a little work to mine as well, but I should have time.

One other thing, Don C. the guy listed on the sharkfest site to RSVP lives in Houston and has a large email list of all (most) 928 owners in the area! Might want to contact him and let him know your around.

M.Max,

I was concerned that you would take it the wrong way. I'm glad that you didn't. Are you related to T Max (Sharkfest e-mail)?
