928S4 towing capacity?

Does anyone know the towing capacity of the 928S4? Just curious.

Max. trailer load:

without trailer brakes 750kg/1653lb (up to grades of16%)
with trailer brakes 1600kg/3527lbs (up to grades of 16%)

Max towing weight: 3470kg/7650lbs

Max tongue weight: 50kg/110lbs

I don't think there was an option code. It was an after-market purchase.

If Pelican doesn't stock it, you may want to try

EDIT: I just found the code....it's M208.

Once towed an alfa romeo gtv 6 with a towbar from L.A. to Lansing Michigan with my 80 928 5 speed. I hardly knew it was there! Car stormed up all the grades even the infamous baker grade in hot summer temps with no problems. I made my own hitch and took off the bumperettes and used those mounting holes. I know there was no toungue weight. Easy tow! Alfa gtv 6 is probably 2800 lbs plus! That was probably 8 years ago with 150,000 miles on the 928! I still have that 928 and it is one of my favorites!

I just think it would rock to pull in to the track driving a 928 and pulling my 911 and car trailer with it!

I think it would be a piece of cake with your S4, just make sure you have trailer brakes. Also do not try to do your top speed of 172 mph while towing!

I have been warned by a few that the S4 auto transmission would suffer due to towing anything larger than a small trailer with track tires.

That quote of 7650lbs is reasonable given the output of the 302 V8 (over 300ft/lbs) but seems high for a sport touring sedan. At that spec (with trailer brakes) you could pull a low-tongue weight trailer with two horses...

Anyone have experience towing track cars and the like?

Hi guys,

I'm one of those die hards who thinks a trailer hitch is inappropriate on a 928 (or a Ferrari).

Anyone who thinks they can "realistically" tow 7600 pounds in a shark just hasn't towed much lately. I have a 1956 Chris Craft Sportsman, mahogany speedboat, which weighs somewhere in the "less than 3000 pounds" range, and I can tell you it will wag an old style Bronco all over the road. I can not imagine towing that with my 928, either over the road, up the boat ramp, or on any steep grade. Don't abuse the machinery, don't drill holes in an exotic body, and paleeeeze don't be seen in this lifetime driving around in a 928 with a trailer hitch, or anything in tow behind one. Get a SUV if you need to tow, or some beater that doesn't have the exotic componentry of a supercar.

Just my humble opinion. Now may I have a ladder to get down off this soapbox??

I don't think the boys in Zuffenhausen would like the idea. The Weissach rear axle is not exactly what you want to be towing with, because it's like plowing a field with a KY derby winner.

well I'm sure it CAN be done, but it's a crime to booger up a perfectly good torque tube by using a world class road car as a tow vehicle. It looks cool, but just picture yourself lugging a trailer with that kind of equipment. I live on a steep grade, on a ridgetop in Tennessee with a very long concrete driveway with switchbacks. I always run up in first gear, being very careful not to let the rpm fall into the damage range. You can put metal to metal on bearings if you lug down, and if anyone has ever had to pull a torque tube to rebuild one, you'll see just how stupid it is to use a road car for a truck.
