Can the 944 engine take 6000 RPMs?
I was thinking of getting a Weltmeister Performance chip that gives a 15 hp @ 6000 RPMs and I was wondering if the engine could handle the high RPMs without damaging. I think because the 944 has no rocker arms setup, 944 could take more RPMs.
I finally got an intake! ![]() ![]() |

6000rpm? Easily... I bounced my old car off its rev-limiter all the time with no problems. Just make sure those timing belts are new!

if you have over 100K miles and haven't replaced your rod bearings I wouldn't do it too often. the rod bearings starve at high rpm

My car may be a 16V but the lower end is the same as the 8V:

I would be woried about that oil pressure at 4.2 at these revs if it was my car.
Hope you did not take the photo while driving at this speed. Greetings Johan

The motor had almost 112,000 on it. It was due for a rebuild anyway. |

that's pretty low mileage for a rebuild, I restate my case: if you have over 100K miles and haven't replaced your rod bearings I wouldn't do it too often. the rod bearings starve at high rpm

Right after I hit 112k, a rod bearing bit the dust.
This was 5 months after I installed a new head. When I say new I mean: 1. new valve guides 2. new cams (chain broke, de-toothed mine) 3. new tensioner 4. new chain 5. valve job I was ordering the parts for the chain/tensioner replacement when that blew. |

Uh, is that a 15hp gain @ 6000rpm on a 944NA? Tell you what, I'll PAY for your chip-upgrade AND your dyno session if you can do a before and after comparison of that chip vs. the stock chip and have it show a 15hp increase. Stock '88 944NA should be putting 125-130rwhp and if you get +15hp over that with just a chip upgrade, I might just buy that car off you as well. Gonna go 944-spec racing and won't those boys be surprized by my secret weapon, heh, heh...

I run my 944 S2 on a regular basis on the Autobahn at constant 5200 Rpm's and never had a problem. I think that a continous speed of 6000 is no problem. Just watch out that ANY 944 will use oil at high rpm's. The reason is that the 3.0 liter engine gives the oil air separator a good workout at those speeds. By the way my car has 115.000 miles on the clock and runs without problems.
