1989 Electronic Instrument Cluster

I have a 1989 928S4 that has an instrument cluster that doesn't seem to be working. No mileage, no idiot lites, no coolant temperature, but it does get some power because some of the guages are stuck in place like fuel, oil pressure. However, the alternator guage works fine, however. Any ideas? A friend mentioned that he had heard it may have to do with the ignition switch.

I have reason to believe that the car may have been jump-started by an idiot as well. I have heard of this damaging the LH brain, but I hadn't heard that it affects the instrument cluster.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Absolutely right, kind of.... The moon roof switch had shorted out and heated up the light wires right next to it and melted the insulation so it grounded. We replace the harness section and rewired it properly. Turned on the key and the magic cluster lit up.

Thanks so much for putting me on the right track.
