Foam Hood Insulation Dry and falling Off
My 928 is starting to show her years. The foam insulation on the underside of the hood is very dry and starting to peel off in clumps. The foam pieces are falling on the engine. I can pick off the pieces after the engine cools, the clumps do not melt and stick to the engine, thats a good thing. I considered peeling all of it off and replacing it. After I peel the insulation off, can I use the car a couple of times without replacing the insulation? Do I have to worry about the heat from the engine ruining the paint job on the hood?
Also, does anybody have any idea where to get replacement insulation? Any suggestion for an alternative material if I cant get the original stuff? Thanks for the help. JoeF |

Hey there.
I'm not sure about the heat damage to the hood, but I would expect it wouldn't do any damage short term. Please don't take my word for it! As for the insulation, I've seen somebody on e-bay selling replacement new insulation. Just punch up porsche 928 in the search....maybe a few days in you will find what you need. Seemed reasonably priced too. I can't remember who is selling this, but they sell a couple things, like the insulation, and I think a "improved" spare cover. Okay then........

The insulation under the hood was for sound deadening, not for heat issues.. You wont damage the paint by keeping it off. The biggest issue is trying to get all the glue off, you have to use "aircraft stripper" or something similar. There are some very good vendors [like Pelican] that sell 928 parts. I would buy the insulation from them over Ebay. It's usally cheaper and you have tech support to fall back on:
1) Pelican 2) www.928intl.com 3) www.devek.net 4) www.928gt.com Also, lots of info on "how-to's" for the 928 [and every other porsche] by going to www.rennlist.com and looking at the web forums. They are similar to this one but have more users/info. I plan on using both the Pelican and Renllist forums. "what worked for me may have been [likely] due to complete blind luck, your mileage may vary"

There's a shop called 928 Motorsports that has hood insulation for sale in eBay right now.

Opinions vary on the use of the "aluminum" wrap vs. stock pad> I bought the aluminum pad then went back to the OEm pad, it seemed more durable and I heard that the aluminum pad may trap condensation behind it over the years. No proof but enought to make me shell out more $$ for the OEM and install it.

Go to 928 International.
I got a 'stock' pad last Fall, $65. Search on Rennlist for installation tips. G'luck.
