Porsche Crest 928 virgin with suspension questions

I recently aquired a 1985 Euro 928S2 5spd. I have owned several 911s and 944s but this is my first 928 and I am thrilled with the car. My only complaint about the car is the front suspension. It just sits a little too high. I have read through several postings on this BBS and there seems to be an overwhelming consensus that the 928 suspension does not take well to modification, in particular lowering. I know that the front spring/ strut assemblies are threaded. Is it as simple as adjusting them to the desired height or are there spring rate considerations here. I have been told that the 928 springs are linear vs. progressive so I am unfamiliar with the effects. Or is there a recomended spring/ strut setup for the car. I would like a firmer ride but don't want to lower the whole car, just the front as it is equipped with 17" wheel due the the Big Red brake upgrade an I don't want to risk tire rub. Any thoughts or advice are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex,

I would recommend calling Susan or Marc at Devek, and they'll fix you up in good (no, great) shape.

Better get your platinum card out, because they have lots of goodies for the 928.

When you say it sits too high, do you mean for your taste or that it's higher than factory spec?
If your car has adjusment collars on the front then lowering is just a matter of turning them down but this will throw the alignment out and you'll be looking at rapid tire wear unless you have it properly aligned once the suspension settles. That is if it's mis-adjusted to begin with; if that's the case you'll need to discover why. Tire rub from oversized tires or (more likely) wrong offset wheels -or- perhaps clamping suspension bushings with a pre-load while doing susp. work could be PO-caused reasons.
If it's at factory height and you want it lower than that, follow P's advice above.
An afterthought; you might check and see if the PO has installed an updated setup there already and perhaps never adjusted it properly?

928ram,

Both actually. From other cars I have seen, it appears to be higher than factory spec. You bring up a valid point however on the wheel off-set. They are aftermarket wheels and although I don't know the specific off-set, thedo appear to protrude from the wheel wells just a tiny bit.

Do you know what the factory height is?

Thanks,
Alex

the factory ride hight is as follows

FRONT
height: measued from tire contact surface to the rear control arm bearing. set vaule of 190mm ( -20mm) max difference R to L ( 10 mm )

I also have 82 euro with 17in whells and it is lowered 1.75in with weltmeister springs. The ride in my mind is better, less of a squat in the rear on accell, feels more stable.

I think also there is an illusion in the wheel opening if you are comparing it to the rear. the aches are alot deeper in the front making it seam like it is high in the front.
