I have two 1980's one runs and drives the other ran after some work , now it will die when you let off the key. I have spark and fuel pressure is about 36 and holding well. one thing we found today is that when i turn the headlights on (when they go up or down) the fuel pump runs. If anybody has any ideas it would be much help thanks,

What do you mean by "let off the key"? Does the car only run when the key is turned all the way to engage the starter but dies when you let go?

When I release the key to the run position. Runs if you hold it in the start position.

I've bought the repair manuals , I have no power going to the coil. If a jumper wire or test wire is used it will run any ideas what to check next?
Thanks

Hmm....you may want to check the 928 Forum on Rennlist. I've heard of this before but never had to deal with it. The headlight issue has me concerned about an electrical short somewhere.

Patzj, I'd start at the ignition switch (electical part), you could pull the switch from the running car then pull the harness down from the one with the problem and plug it in and try starting with a screwdriver in the slot ( don't drive in this condition unless you also unlock the column with the key).
Switch failures are not unheard of and seem to be more comon in early cars. If the switch has broken internally it may very well be causing all the problems. Another place to give some attention would be all the ground points on the body. |

I had a similar problem on another type of car (Rolls-Royce) and it was the igntion switch. Over the years the "run" contact had worn down so that releasing the key from the "start" position would make it die. I had to disassemble the switch and replace the contact plate.
