stereo recommendations?

I did a search on this forum but didn't find much.... so here's my question --

I'm a new owner of a '81 928 (my other Porsche is a 911sc Targa). The stereo in the 928 is the original Blaupunkt AM/FM Cassette unit, and I assume the original speakers. What would you recommend as a good upgrade CD/AM/FM unit that fits without (or as little as possible) modification to the dash and is less on all the gee-whiz flashy lights that seem to be the big feature of so many stereos available these days. Also what size speakers came standard in the doors and back seats -- and do you have recommendations on replacements/upgrades that fit within stock openings?

the sound of that V-8 is music enough -- but every now and then its nice to have a decent sounding stereo too.

thanks in advance.

I did an 82 928, finished it last winter and I have been very pleased with it.

I bought my 82 928 in 1998. It had the original Blaupunkt radio and a Blaupunkt 7 band stalk graphic equalizer.

I changed the radio to a Blaupunkt Madison AM/FM/CD (which does not have the screwball graphics, just a clean looking charcoal radio). Then I upgraded all the factory speakers to high power rated MB Quarts.

I put a 4 channel Rockford Fosgate 4 channel 250 watt amp under the passenger seat.

I put the crossover network in the little compartment where the factory amp was. This is just to the right of the passanger seat. This is also the collection point for all of the speaker wires except the subwoofer leads. I needed a crossover network for the rear speakers and tweeters. I added two Blaupunkt "bullet" tweeters in a little void I found between the back seat upright part and the side of the car. They are just pressed in, not screwed to anything. The door speakers had the crossover buit into the coax speaker.

Lastly, I converted the spare tire compartment into a subwoofer amp compartment and subwoofer enclosure. The subwoofer amp is another RF amp, but a two/one channel amp used as a single channel, and it is rated at 200 watts. The volume is correct for a 10" subwoofer even after counting the volume taken up by the subwoofer amp. I lined it with the sound deadner stuff you get at the audio stores. I monitored the amp temperature at first and it never overheated even though it is in a sealed enclosure. I also picked up the power for the 4 channel amp and subwoofer amp here because the battery compartment is below the spare tire compartment (how conveinent!). It was tough getting the speaker mount right for the subwoofer. I used the new fiber board stuff, 1/2". Several trial and error attempts, the last one worked. I got a seal with layers of self adhesive weather stripping. The speaker and fiber board are held in place with two screws that go into the brackets that were there.

I mounted the spare tire with a bolt to the frame. I used some spare tire holder pieces that I got from a Jeep in a wrecking yard. The air pump rides inside the spare and I got a spare tire cover. I keep the rear cargo cover in place to hide it all because spare tire would not look right. It looks really cool if you leave the spare tire out of the car and use the newer car spare approach, which I think is a souped up version of flat fixit.

Anyway, I just bought a 94 GTS and have the 82 for sale. It is on autotrader. There are some pictures that show the subwoofer and spare tire. The 82 928 sounds better that the 94 GTS stereo! Now I guess the 82 project will be a warmup for upgrading the GTS stereo.

Sorry about that double post. I thought it didn't take the first one because it had too many words. So I whittled it down and resent it and they both show up. Oh well, that was my first post. I never done this before.
