87' 928S4 price

Looking at a 1987 928S4 auto w/100,000 miles.

It's black on black w/ turbo twists wheels
Waterpump changed and timing belt done
Interior in good cond only one tear on the driver side bolster.
Decent cond. rear hatch lock needs to be replaced and the passenger side window switch is a little sticky.

Seller wants $3,800

Not sure if price worth the taking??

$3,800?? That about 1/2 what a ratty S4 sells for. Unless that's a misprint, it's worth it if only to flip it and make a couple grand for your effort.

At that price, I can't see where you could go wrong.

Timing belt/Wp are done, so that eliminates one big dollar maintanance item; car runs good which means injection electronics are in order. Window switch and hatch lock should be minor; I believe leather seat kit for both fronts is <$1K, less in vinyl. Aside from the outside possibility of trans trouble in the future (these are very good transmissions), I don't see any major problems at 100K miles on an S4.

The only thing I can think of to be concerned about is the uncommon occurance of thrust bearing failure with 32V/auto 928s. This will show itself as a knock in the engine, much like a rod knock; you want to give a good listen to the engine. Preventive mainanance for this is simple; remove lower bellhousing, loosen driveshaft clamp, check/set crankshaft endplay, re-tighten clamp. No more than an hour total time to check/adjust at home or shop.

I'd buy it.
