Squealing Brakes
Both the front and rear brakes on my 89 928 have a tendency to make a horrible squealing sound when I come to a stop. It seems to happen when I slow down from driving at speeds of 30 MPH or less. Not only is the sound painful to the ears, it's also embarrassing when coming to a red light or pulling into a parking space.
A local Porsche dealer inspected the car and said the pads and rotors appeared to be fairly new, but recommended that I replace them for $2k. But even then, they couldn't guarantee that this would end the noise. They did say that there hasn't been any permanent damage even though it sounds like metal against metal. I called the local Ruf dealer and he told me that it sounds like an issue with glazing and that I needed to take the car out on the interstate and drive the car hard and heat up the brakes. I've done a little of this, but haven't seen much reduction in the noise. Could use help on this..... |

From what I understand, the multi-piston calipers used in your car MUST have vibration dampers installed (or new if present are shot), or they will squeal as you describe.
Look here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/928M/POR_928M_BRKpad_pg3.htm#item8 They only show 2 versions; one says '92 on, the other isn't year specific. Probably worth a phone call to be sure which you need. |

928 brakes tend squeal, depends on the pads installed. We have found that PBR brand seem to be the quietest.

Pad squeel is the result of high frequency vibration. There are a couple ways to get rid of this vibration, and if you have the anti squeel plates it is best to just glue them to the back of the pad. If not, just place some high temp silicone across the back side of your pad, and insert back into the caliper after it cures up.

Is it just your pads? I work for Oreilly Auto Parts. I run Wagner Thermoquiets on mine, they do really well with noise and dusting. We sell them, they usually have to be ordered, but its only like a day to get em.

Park Place Porsche in Dallas removed the wheels and said that the pads and rotors looked fairly new and that the squealing was not making any damage to them. They did not tell me if they were Porsche parts. Their only recommendation was to replace pads and rotors on all four wheels at a cost of 2 grand, but there was no guarantee that it would stop the noise.
The squealing is so loud that it can be heard by other drivers two lanes over with their windows up. Other local Porsche mechanics have told me I might have a glazing problem and that I should hit the brakes hard several times when driving at high speed. That would knock a lot of the dust off the pads. |

Just replace them, hitting the brakes real hard will not take the glaze off, only replacing the pads and turning the rotors will fix it. Glaze is caused by heat, hitting the brakes real hard causes heat.

Believe it or not, one day they just stopped squealing. I never did anything to them except taking the 928 out on the interstate and driving/braking it hard for an hour. Just glad that 3 months of ear shattering noise has gone away.
