Oh Mate. Welcome to Porsche 928 Ownership. You have now entered the world of a car which has an electrical system that is a complete nightmare and unfortunately gives alot of trouble. However the 928 is one of my favourite Porsche models ever made and if you love the 928's as much as me than you by them for the passion.
Anyway to your problem. The fault is more than likely in your instrument panel as they are horrible little buggers. Don't know what your knowledge of electrical stuff is like but here is what I would do.
1. First check for corrosion in fuse box at the floor (Very very common)
2. Not the problem, Ok you now need to pull out the instrument panel.
3. Once removed check for the obvious, Dry Solder joints, corroded pcb tracks, resistance in ground circuit. These early 928s have copper rivots near the speedo. They corrode badly causing resistance in the ground circuit to everything resulting in your problem and even worse aswell. You need to clean these rivots and resolder them so everything has a nice clean connection from the rivot to where the pcb track takes it.
4. Alos look for corroded or broken pcb tracks as they are plastic and break.
5. These 928 instrument panels are horrible things to work with and give alot of trouble at times. I bet you the problem lies in there somewhere. Good Luck and I hope you get it sorted out in the end. You do however have a magnificent car though. The 928's are an amazing piece of work.

Porsche Crest

Thanks so much! My fuse box looks clean and dry..
I will take a look at the circuit board behind the instrument panel.

Thanks

Have you done your annual electrical maintenance?

I gained 2.5 volts on my dashboard voltmeter.

Wally Plumley (928 specialists) can send you his post about doing this.

His e-mail : wplumley@bellsouth.net

The short answer is probably taking the instrument pod out and cleaning the contacts- be careful doing this as the electrical contacts are fragile.

Hope this helps!
