Starting of 81 Porsche 928

The car turns over and sounds like it will start, but it does not. I believe we are getting spark, and I can smell fuel.

Any suggestion where to start? The car has been setting since April 06.

Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are fouled? How did you check to see that you are getting spark?

Starting

I am going to replace the following:

* Wires

* Spark Plugs

* Air filter

* Smog Filter

* Fuel Filter.

* Drain gas and replace with fresh gas.

I believe that these items should be replaced anyway.

Recommend you add a lot of fresh fuel, clean your grounds, and check for corrosion on the fuel pump relay and fuses. Also might check the contact on the green wire that connects the ignition module to the distributor. If those are all OK, check for major vacuum leaks.

Any luck getting it started yet? If you think the spark is ok, you could pull a fuel pump relay to ensure no fuel will get to the engine (in case it's getting too much fuel) make sure your plugs are dry (not flooded) then try a shot of starting fluid. crank the engine, it should start for a few seconds. if it does start and run for a few seconds it rules out any problem with the ignition system- saving you money on buying a whole new spark plug wire set. either way i dont think that spark plug wires would go completely bad after only sitting for a few months (if they were bad, the engine might miss, but not start? I don't think so)

If you have it running already let us know how you fixed it.

Some what running

Well . . .

I just purchased this car a weeks ago. I have on order a gas tank, radiator to provide greater reliablity while cruising. The vaccum lines are in bad shape. Thoses are going to be replaced this weekend. I have replaced the spark plugs and replaced the wires. I have drained the gas tank and added 91 gas. The car started right up, and kept running. At idle, it sounds like I may have a hose off or vaccum leak.

I will be looking at the coolant system this weekend too. I have purchased a coolant pressure tester to check for leaks. We are also going to check the voltage on the engine sensors too.

My son is going to rebuild the 3 speed transmission in the car. He is in the automotive trade.

I will keep you updated.
