Is an 83' 944 engine a free turning engine?

Hello,

I just purchased a 1983 Porsche 944 5 speed.
I need to get better fuel economy, and this is it.

I have a 79' 928, and an 86' 928, but I really love this
little 4 cyclinder bugger

My question is this 83' 944 engine a free turning engine?
The timing belt has about 17k on it?

The car has 106k on it.
Thanks, www.KevinGerard.net

You mean is it interference or non-interference?

Well, according to Pelican parts, all 944 motors are interference designs.

IOW....if you at all suspect the timing belt is in any way worn or bad....replace it.

" The 944 has several major pluses, from its modern design to its galvanized bodywork, but there are a few problem areas that need to be addressed. For one, these engines feature an interference design, so a broken timing belt can be an expensive problem as the valves meet the pistons."

944s are all interference engines!
they are also prone to #2 rod bearing failure

I had an early 944 to Kevin, great car for what my needs were (reliable commuter) I did 50,000 miles on mine in about 2.5 yrs and replaced the starter and an oil cooler gasket, thats it.

Anyway I must like pain, is that 86 928 still for sale? You mentioned high mileage on the belts, anything else that would make a long drive questionable? Thanks
