Observations of a New Owner... 84 928S
JMO!
Car begs to be driven hard and Engine is only happy when nailed down above 2600 RPM. Cam Profile is long enough to explain that. The best Production FWD chassis I have driven. Clean filters and Clean oil, and high octane at the pump, are all that it requires. Synthetics may be a modern option, but this engine is very happy with quality Dinosaur oil. What it was designed for. Change more often if you wish. Modern tires and subtle pressure adjustments , as well as a PRO Brake job, make it special. 928's are a bargain. This is also one fine Forum! Thanks All! TY

Not in my owners Manual! 84S
Synth's may be better but I spent a lot of years on a Superflo Dyno and and was sponsered by Valvoline...circa 1980 to 83. NASCAR Righteous engines do just as well on the Dinosaur. There are no BAD lubes today. Take yer Pick! FACT

Porsche has released several TSB's calling for the use of synthetic oils. This issue has been extensively covered on every 928 site in the past(especially on rennlist). I prefer synthetic cause it only has to be changed every 12k miles....thereby actually saving me money vs using a hydrocarbon product.(not to mention it's superior performance).

I've got plenty of Redline around here. May just use it next change.
If it was a pure weekend racecar, the Redline would be in it already, but I don't drive it hard, hard, like that. Nice car! These are very nice Porsche designs. Love the V8!

IMO you can certainly get away with dino oil bro, i just wanted to be clear that Porsche itself definitely calls for it....just so you know basically.

now picture all that aluminum covered with sludge. I would use full synthetic oil. why? does it make more HP on the dyno.... as you know it doesn't . most guys at an auto parts store will tell you it does, but they are pretty dumb. the advantage is Synthetic oil doesn't start burning until higher temps so you don't get a bunch of ash inside your engine.
I run mobil 1 or castrol synthetic in my porsche and my mercedes. I run whatever oil is on sale in my 1970 chevy pickup, because it leaks and burns so much and i don't like seeing $5/qt oil on the ground. A rebuild kit including new TRW pistons for my truck is under 500 bucks, so I don't give a hoot if I have to rebuild it every 10 years. I would swap every lubricant in your car for synthetic if I were you. |

Thanks All!
Just tached her up in all gears on the expressway, with 15-50W Synthetic in the engine, and will change trans to synth, soon. She is really running well and the brakes are excellent now after bedding in the new pads. Never too old to learn, just stubborn..LOL FLY A PORSCHE!

Call me Old Age Crazy, but I guarantee some fast times next year.
I intend to race this 928S. This car is a natural.

I've bought plenty of oil in my time (try 13 gallons every time I service my 600HP Cummins---ONCE A MONTH!!!!), but if Porsche recommends Mobil 1, I'm there.
It's good stuff, doesn't cost a bundle, and you can get it at any Walmart..... (make sure you replace the oil plug sealing ring every time you service the oil) Good luck on your 928 journey, you'll have a great time with the 'vettes. regards---rhjames

I agree that porsche now recommends Mobil 1 Oil now. When my 86 928S was built, why did porsche stick Shell Oil stickers under the hood of my car? I think any major brand full synthetic oil of the proper weight will be better than any oil that was available in 1984.

the Shell oil was factory fill at the time of build. Many marques get significant discounts on oil and other products so ours (928's) just happened to be what Porsche contracted for.

If by some chance you have a tiny oil leak, synthetic doesn't stink like dino oil, same if a bit of oil is getting past the rings.
