Brake booster or master cylinder or ???

Periodically when I drive my '82 auto the brakes start dragging and will get worse to where I put it in neutral the dragging brakes will slow the car down. I turn off the car and turn it back on and and the symptoms go away. Unfortunately I am never close enough to my mechanic when it happens and I don't want to drive a long way with the brakes dragging. It sounds like the booster but I don't want to replace the booster if it's the M/C and visa versa. My understanding is if the booster goes it's gone but that dowsn''t seem to be the case here but symptems seem booster like. Any imput?

Wow. wouldn't that be sweet. Is that something I could do myself or does it take a mechanic or even a bodyshop?

arclight,
I found the rod the is attached to the brake pedal mechanism that goes through the fire wall. On the nearest end of the rod is a 17mm nut. Is that what I adjust? I don't know if my brake lights are on that's a good questio. Thank you for your help
