Most Underrated Porsche of all time 944 Turbo S
I am a 928 lover, no question. However, its interesting that, while the 944 is generally considered much weaker than a V8 928 Porsche, the 1989 944 Turbo actually is FASTER than all of them, including the GTS. Check out the stock times :
1989 944 Turbo S 0 - 60 5.5 secs 1/4 mile 13.5 secs ! It really shows a person that not everything is simply based on speed, although speed and power are ...NICE~. The 1989 944 - the most underrated Porsche of all time

13.5 is about what my lightened and rodded 928S runs.
![]() Most 928s are supposedly considerably quicker than their advertised times by the way. |

Nobody that likes fast runs a stock 944T anyway, same for a 928. Both cars have speed limited only by your wallet, and both are made by Porsche, but they are really very little alike. Pick the one that suits you and go have fun. Not much point to rating, under or otherwise.

We went to the Porsche Concours in October (Sugarland, TX), only to find there were only 2 928s (mine and a prestine S4) and one 944 turbo.
The 944 had a chip in it, bigger tire/wheel package, some suspension mods, but otherwise just clean as a new one. The owner claimed 300+ HP and terrorizing Camaro's and Vette's to no end. The Chebbies were off the line quicker, but once he was rolling, the game was on..... Considering how inexpensive the 944's are (including the turbo's), why not have a 928 a-n-d a 944 turbo in the garage??? Double the fun....... Regards---rhjames ![]()

The 951 S is a great little toy and can be thrown around a lot easier than a 928 but they are totally different animals.

Neither car is all that expensive to buy, pick what you like and go for it. I've had both, and other cars have done for me pretty much the same as the 951, but nothing is really like a 928.

I do have one of each. I must admit I like the thrust of a naturally aspirated car. The 944 is an awesomely fast car, but I have thought of putting in a bypass just to get a quicker spool up. I really like cars with good throttle response and a broad usable torque curve, but you never see 944Ts modded for that kind of driveability. Still a rush though.

Take that "thrust" you refer to and add two turbochargers...now we're talkin' :-)
This is the problem with small displacement high boost cars...you have to have a very large turbo to flow the gas, so the spool times often suffer. Ever look at the dyno sheets on a 1000HP Supra? Nothing below about 6,000RPM, then you are slammed hard. On the street it is all about area under the curve.
