the Danglerb plan

Having followed this journey the "Danglerb" is on, bouncing from one subject to the next without listening/catorgorizing/planning all of the information that's out there, I have come up with comparative cost analysis of where he may end this madness.

After his initial 928 purchase, let's say a reasonable $5K figure, his past 3 month spending spree on repairs and such--another $5K to $7K, and now the eBay purchase of the Euro junker--another near $3K, plus the foreseen $5K to $7K building his non-smog compliant hybrid, we come to a grand total of $18K (low side) to $22K (high side).

In the end of this scenario, we have a early 928 with a non-smog compliant (he worries about this endlessly) Euro hybrid for the same price as a nice S4 or (low side) 928 GTS.

He's already claimed to not be doing the motor/upgrade work himself (as I would have), so where is the enjoyment, much less financial sense, of doing this project of which he may never be satisfied with?

Dude, if you had really thought out this mess, you could have an S4/GTS sitting in your garage for you to immediately enjoy.

I can't wait to see the end result.

Truly amazing......

Since I now have a complete Euro S2 motor, which has passed Calif smog half a dozen times according to the DMV smog history, with about $2k of stuff in it I can sell, I really haven't tallied up what the new total looks like, but it was about $23k once I had everything I wanted done when it included the hybrid motor. A lot of that cost is doing things right, paying the PM ahead on a car I expect to keep a long time.

Why is it so many of you act like a 16v 928 isn't worth properly repairing? I am really sick of this "you could have had a 32v for that" litany.

"Dude, if you had really thought out this mess"

I just thought about it differently than you did.

I have that much easy in my 77 resto project, while I don't necessarily agree with his thinking, I support him because he has somewhat of a vision and is working on getting there, AND doesn't mind spending the money to get where he wants to be, something I can't say for many others (which is why so many early cars are languishing in backyards)

Yes Rixter, I support his "vision" as well, but after doing extensive research on this I have concluded that his plan is, well, expensive and may not be able to be attained given the parameters he has expressed here.

Mmm....928 GTS. 345 hp in stock form, add any of the available turbo/supercharger combinations, and you've got a ride that'll toast anything on the tuner scene with the comfort of a luxury car sports car. All for less than $30K, the same $$$ he'll have in his ride when he gets it put together. Add a 300 horse shot of nitrous, and you'll be in Carrera GT land.....

It's your money, and that's fine.

Now that you've got a 310 horse Euro in your hands, does this mean you'll just swap it in and be done with this?

Probably not.....

the problem with that is he is in Cali... smog is a MAJOR issue, an sc or turbo most likely will not pass ... so back to his plan

personally, I'm looking at 525rwhp for the engine I'm building
85-86 block, S4 pistons = 8.3-8.4/1 CR + TS at 14lbs and I'm there
but this wouldn't fly on the west coast, heck I don't have to use ANY emission equipment here, my buddy is running straight pipes and no one hassles him
if he REALLY wanted super power, I'd suggest the LT1 conversion...

Facts/information on his "plan":

I consulted with one of my long time Caltrans inspector friends.....

Technically, you'll be in violation of emissions (smog) regulations in California if you change "ANY" emissions equipment from OEM installed components. This includes changing original engines to something that was not original equipment (ex: putting a euro engine in a US spec car, or vice-versa).

In other words, your project is illegal in the great state of nuttiness.

But, as I have said before, the run of the mill inspector probably one know what the heck he/she is looking at, as long as the change doesn't look obvious and it blows good numbers.

Enough said----

Whats your point RH?

Of course its "technically" illegal, so is driving 56 MPH. This is about not getting caught, and practical steps to take in that direction.

The "run of the mill inspector" will most likely be using something like the Mitchell online service manual to verify the presence and proper hook up of all the smog equipment, checking each one off from a list. Things like where the vacuum hoses go will be important. Thats the visual inspection, and if it passes he runs the 1500/2500 rpm tailpipe test and checks a few other bits like the gas and radiator caps.

"Engine change" is the Pandora's box I don't want opened, and the reason I am going to so much trouble to make it "look" normal.
